2. App Overview
The app "Rafiq Almuslim / رفيق المسلم" is an Islamic companion app for Android. It includes the following features, among others:
- Prayer times (automatically by location or manual city selection)
- Quran text with Tajweed highlighting and recitation audio
- Adhkar (Islamic remembrances and supplications)
- Qibla compass (prayer direction towards Mecca)
- Search for nearby mosques
- Hadith collection in multiple languages
- Voluntary fasting calendar and Ramadan archive
- Local settings, backup function and further preferences
The app is an informational tool and does not replace any recognised religious authority or individual religious, legal, or medical advice.
3. Location Data
The app may request ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION and
ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION permissions for the following purposes:
- Prayer times: Coordinates are processed locally on the device to calculate prayer times.
- Qibla direction: Coordinates are processed locally to calculate the prayer direction towards Mecca.
- Mosque search: Coordinates are transmitted to the Overpass API (see section 4).
Location permission is voluntary — you can alternatively select a city manually. Without the permission, certain features will be limited.
To revoke the permission:
Android Settings → Apps → Rafiq Almuslim → Permissions → Location
Location data is not used for advertising purposes and is not transmitted to the app operator.
4. Mosque Search / Overpass API
When you use the "Nearby Mosques" feature, your GPS coordinates are transmitted to the Overpass API to search for nearby mosques from the OpenStreetMap database. This transmission is technically required.
Requests may be sent to the following servers:

The coordinates are transmitted exclusively for this search request — not for advertising, profiling, or other purposes. The feature is only invoked when you actively open the "Nearby Mosques" section.

5. Map Data / OpenStreetMap
For map and compass views (mosque finder, qibla screen), the app loads map tiles
from the server https://tile.openstreetmap.org. Your IP address may
be transmitted to OpenStreetMap servers during this process.

6. Local Data Storage
The app stores user data exclusively locally on your device (Android SharedPreferences and private app directory). This data is not transmitted to the app operator's servers. Data stored locally may include:
- Prayer settings (calculation method, adhan selection, time adjustments)
- Preferred city / manually set location
- Language settings and app preferences
- Notification settings
- Quran reading progress (surah, verse, daily goal, reading log) and bookmarks
- Adhkar progress and settings
- Voluntary fasting entries and Ramadan archive
- Downloaded Quran recitation audio files (in private app directory)
Backup Feature
The app offers a voluntary backup/export feature (Settings → Backup) via Android file picker. The app accesses only the file explicitly selected by the user. The backup file contains app settings and Quran reading progress, but no GPS coordinates. Backup files are not uploaded.
All local data can be deleted via:
Android Settings → Apps → Rafiq Almuslim → Storage → Clear Data
or by uninstalling the app.
7. Notifications
The app may use the POST_NOTIFICATIONS permission (Android 13+) for
prayer time reminders. Notifications are scheduled locally on the device using
the Android AlarmManager — no external push servers or third-party
notification services are used.
To disable notifications: app settings or Android System Settings → Apps → Rafiq Almuslim → Notifications.
8. Audio / Media
The app may download Quran recitation audio files from
https://everyayah.com and store them locally in the private app
directory. After download, audio is played locally.
- The app does not record microphone audio.
- The app does not access the user's music library.
9. No User Accounts
The app does not require a user account or login procedure. No login credentials, email addresses, or other personal account data are collected. Since no accounts are created, no account deletion process is necessary.
10. No Ads, No Tracking, No Analytics
The app:
- displays no advertising (no AdMob, no Meta Audience Network, etc.)
- uses no analytics or tracking tools (no Firebase Analytics, no Google Analytics, no Crashlytics, no Mixpanel, no Sentry, etc.)
- transmits no usage data or crash data to servers
- creates no user profiles
- uses no Advertising ID
- does not sell user data
The app contains no in-app purchases or subscriptions. No payment data is collected.
11. Third-party Services
Depending on the features used and app version, the following external services may be contacted. The respective providers are responsible for their own data processing.
Purpose: Mosque search. Location coordinates required. Privacy: osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy
Purpose: Map tiles in mosque and qibla views. IP address may be transmitted during tile requests.
Purpose: Quran text with Tajweed highlighting. Transmitted: surah/verse number (no personal data). Only when not locally cached.
Purpose: Quran text and chapter metadata (fallback). Transmitted: surah number (no personal data).
Purpose: Hadith texts in multiple languages. Transmitted: category/hadith ID (no personal data).
Purpose: Download of Quran recitation audio packages. Transmitted: surah/verse number as file path (no personal data).
Purpose: Official prayer times for Austrian cities (only when "Islamic Centre AT" method is selected). Transmitted: city name (no personal data).
Used internally by the Android SDK. Google's Privacy Policy applies.
12. Data Security
Where the app connects to external services, communication takes place via HTTPS. Please note that no internet transmission can be considered completely secure. Since the app does not operate its own servers and does not transmit user data to our servers, there are no server-side data loss risks.
13. Your GDPR Rights
Since most user data is stored exclusively locally on your device, you can delete it at any time. You also have the following rights:

14. Note on Children
The app is not specifically designed for children under the age of 13 and is intended for a general Muslim audience. No personal data from children is knowingly collected. Children under 13 should only use the app with the consent of their parents or guardians.
15. Changes to this Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated when the app or legal requirements change. The current version is always available at rafiqalmuslim.app/privacy-policy/ (German reference version). For significant changes, users will be notified via app update release notes. Continued use of the app constitutes acceptance.
